FAQs

How should I handle my cake?

Always handle the cake box from the bottom, never from the sides as you'll press the sides of the box into the cake.  Carefully lift the cake box from the bottom only, keeping one hand underneath and the other hand against a corner to support the box as you carry it.

What's the best way to transport my cake?

Place your cake on the flattest surface in your car, usually the passenger side footwell or with the passenger holding the cake box. If it's a hot and sunny day, make sure your AC is on as low as it will go and cover the cake box with a blanket to shield it from direct sunlight.  Heat and sunlight is buttercream's arch enemy!

What should I do with the cake when I get it home?

We will give you instructions when you pick up or we deliver the cake.  If you plan to eat the cake the same day as pick-up it can be kept in a cool space in your home and away from direct sunlight until you are ready to serve.

If you plan to eat the cake the next day, we advise placing the cake in a fridge away from strong odours.  Remove the cake from the fridge at least 1.5 hours before serving to bring it back up to room temperature - this is an absolute must!

Why do cake makers insist on bringing a cake to room temperature?

We use glorious butter in our cakes and buttercream, and we can't stress enough the importance of bringing a cake to room temperature before serving, and it's not just a recommendation, we insist! Think about how hard and crumbly butter is just out of the fridge vs soft room temp butter - the same physics applies to your cake and no one likes a hard crumbly cake.

How do I cut my cake to get the maximum number of portions?

Cakes can be sliced a few ways.  The first being the traditional cake wedge - the triangle of perfection. This is great for afternoon tea cakes when you don't have too many guests, but thin wedges can fall apart.

For a large number of guests, slicing a tall celebration cake into squares, either 1x1 inch coffee portions or 1x2 inch dessert portions will yield the max number of portions that are sturdy and more equal.

First cut the cake in half, then turn the cake so one half is facing you, and slice into strips. These strips can then be cut into smaller pieces

How do I store leftovers?

If for some odd reason you happen to have left over cake, first chill the cake in the fridge for 20 mins so the buttercream firms up, then wrap in cling wrap and store in a sealed container so the cake retains moisture as well as protecting it from strong odours.  If you wish, you can also freeze the cake after wrapping and putting it in a sealed container. To defrost remove the cake from the freezer, immediately unwrap and defrost on a plate under a sturdy food cover.
